“The most common problem I hear from golfers is they can’t hit the driver. They usually want a quick fix. The thing is, a quick fix is like a band-aid, it falls off. I want my students to develop a swing and that’s found in the fundamentals.

“I look at their fundamentals and I want to know how they can conceptualize the swing. It’s not so much the mechanics, but their overall image of the golf swing. Most people swing to hit the ball, but the ball should get in the way of the club swinging to the target.

“We’ll start a lesson with a comparative swing video analysis. This is an amazing teaching tool. I’ll pick a touring pro with a similar build, and we’ll see your swing and the pro’s side by side. It’s a great way for my students to see what their swing really looks like. For the most part, they’re often surprised it’s not too bad!

“Then we’ll talk about posture, grip, and alignment. Posture affects balance in the swing plane, grip controls the clubface, and alignment determines the initial path of the ball’s flight. I am convinced that if my students concentrate on these three things, they’ll develop a repeatable swing.

“My philosophy revolves around the fundamentals allowing the swing to happen rather than forcing or creating the swing.

“My students come to me to tap into my knowledge and experience. You can’t see your swing. I watch you make a swing, video your swing, and then set you on the right path to a repeating, powerful golf swing.”

Ed Evans earned his Class A PGA Certification in 1991. He’s worked in the golf business professionally since 1982. He shot in the 70s when he was only fourteen at Hidden Valley in Whitesboro. It was there he fell in love with the game and decided he’d get into the golf business. He began his career in Vermont, teaching at the Stratton Golf School, then working as the pro at the Quechee Golf Club. During this time, he also played the mini-tours in Florida.

Since coming back to this area, he’s worked at Newport, the Yahnundasis, the Appletree Golf Center, Rome Country Club, the Skenandoa Club and the Ed Evans Center for Golf Improvement. He’s looking forward to 2009 helping Central New York’s golfers have more fun playing better golf.
